Some great analysis here by my colleague Mark Loughney! Many have assumed that the growth of FAST channels is being driven by less desirable TV customers: folks who don't care about TV enough to pay for it. But what if that's not true? As Mark writes in the latest edition of #HubIntel, FASTs are attracting viewers that are diverse, engaged, and just as willing to pay for quality content as their non-FAST watching counterparts. This bodes well for media companies like Paramount or Fox Entertainment that want to use FASTs as a feeder system for their premium platforms. It also explains why others like The Walt Disney Company and Netflix are considering their own FAST channels. Measuring what is being tuned is pretty straightforward. The trick is determining WHO is viewing. Nielsen's panels allow us to determine who is front of the screen and provide metrics like co-viewing. What is co-viewing? If you want to understand why Meta pivoted back to politics, it's because that's where voters are getting their news and information. In the 2024 post-election survey I did with the Center for Campaign Innovation, more voters now get their news from social media than from their local TV news. Between Facebook and Instagram, Meta has 2 of the top 3 social media platforms that voters use on a daily basis (along with YouTube). While Meta and other social media companies may have tried to downplay politics the past few years, it's clear that their users are still wanting to get news about politics and government through social media. https://lnkd.in/em79gWtp

"Warner Bros. Discovery saw TV advertising fall 13% in the third quarter of 2023, to $1.71 billion. Paramount Global registered a 14% dip in the same category, to the same figure, while NBCU logged a decline of 8.4% to $1.91 billion. Disney noted “a decrease in advertising revenue” at ABC and its local TV stations and “a modest increase in advertising revenue” at ESPN and around its other sports programming. Even Fox, which relies more directly on sports, saw its overall ad revenue fall by 1.6%. These results challenge the conventional wisdom that TV advertising will grow even with declining ratings because major advertisers can’t resist the power of the medium’s mass-market reach. Ever wonder why companies don’t include the survey methodology in a press release? Simple. The majority of the time the survey is flawed and they don’t want to disclose that to the public. It’s highly likely they went with a cheap survey company and didn’t realize they made a bad decision until after the survey was completed. At that point they had a choice - do nothing with the results or release the flawed results and hide the “source” (typically defined in the press release as a “independent third party research firm” and not the actual name of the market research firm which SHOULD ADD validity). Hiding the name of the market research firm that conducted the survey is a clear indicator the results likely have errors. I feel like Roz from Monsters Inc. “I’m watching you. Always watching. Always.” PS - if you have a different reason why the methodology isn’t included or the name of the market research firm isn’t in the #PR or #marketing materials you might have worked with I would love to hear why! PPS - Roz was voiced by Pixar story artist Bob Peterson! I never knew it wasn’t a grandma until today! 😂
