Rich in umami, smooth in texture, and virtually void of astringency, Ippoen is a top-class gyokuro that is a favorite among our patrons. We recommend enjoying Ippoen’s full-bodied, but elegant character slowly at contemplative tea sessions. We also recommend this tea as cold brew, to taste the full potential of its deep umami and sweetness.
Ways to Prepare
Cold brewing brings out the most sweetness and umami from the leaves.

Good but not worth the extra money
This tea is high quality but no better than the less expensive grades of Gyokuro. I have tried Rimpo (least expensive), Kanro (middle) and Ippoen (most expensive). I like the Rimpo best. The Kanro and Ippoen taste essentially identical to me. Go with the Rimpo and save your money.

Something to treasure
I was very pleased by the aroma that greeted me when I first opened the bag. I made sure my water temp and timing was just right ... the result was an amazing cup of tea! The light green color, aroma and taste was perfect. I am very happy with my purchase. This tea is truly something to treasure!

A great gyokuro for special occasions, great with the cold brew method as well as the regular hot way.

Nectar of the Gods
This is the tea I most enjoy. I first had it when I visited the Ippodo shop in NYC. Now, I drink it several times per week, choosing Ippodo Kanro or Genmaicha at other times. No other tea company I can find seems to have perfected the art of selecting, packaging, and delivering their tea to the degree that Ippodo has done so. Colleagues of mine in Japan even visited the Kyoto location for me and sent a very special package including the Ippodo Kyushu, which is simply perfect. Thank you.

Best Gyokuro Ever
This tea is smooth with absolutely no bitterness at all. It has a fresh pleasant slightly vegetal, almost sweet taste which actually brews green, not brown like some teas. I’ve been buying this tea for years and really appreciate the U.S. and Canada location for it’s super fast shipping.

Best tea I’ve ever had.
I seldom write reviews, but I figure it’s worth it here for anyone on the fence about spending $40 on 50g of tea.
This tea is full bodied, rich, and elegant. There is zero astringency, and I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth the finish is, given this tea’s heavy umami profile. Every sip is a complex journey, velvety smooth and a richness that’s difficult to put into words.
I have never been so satisfied with slowly sipping a tea before. This tea is meant to be cherished, and enjoyed at a slow pace for the best of tea sessions.
This tea is also good pot after pot. Second and third brews are often just as tasty, and remain smooth and delicious.
I am massively satisfied. This tea is very expensive, but worth the money if you’re an avid tea drinker and want something special.

Delicate tea
This tea steeps very light and vegetal. There's no astringency to it. It taste much like matcha, but in whole leaf form. It's good but I took a star off because of the high price tag.
