Vice President Kamala Harris told close allies that negative news coverage would be different if she were like any of her predecessors, who were all white males.
Harris also confided that the issues she has attempted to manage, including voting rights and immigration, have created difficulties for her, according to the New York Times.
“I think it’s no secret that the different things she has been asked to take on are incredibly demanding, not always well understood publicly and take a lot of work as well as a lot of skill,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told the outlet.
Harris has been criticized for her weak response to the Biden border crisis and not visiting the U.S.-Mexico border sooner.
A recent Rasmussen Reports survey showed more than half of U.S. voters hold a negative opinion of the vice president. Nearly 60% of voters report they view the Harris unfavorably, with 50% holding a ‘very unfavorable’ impression.
Issues with public opinion are not the only concern, as the vice president deals with internal staffing struggles.

Peter Velz, the vice president’s director of press operations, is set to leave this month, while Harris’s communications director, Ashley Etienne, a former top adviser to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a former Obama administration official, resigned in November. Several advance staffers left over the summer. A CNN report last month said Harris’s chief of staff, Tina Flournoy, struggled to recruit new staff.
