‘Allusions to homosexuality’: Sam Elliott slams new Western for Chippendales cowboys

.

Actor Sam Elliott ripped Oscar-nominated Western film The Power of the Dog in a podcast appearance Monday, calling the movie a “piece of s***.”

The 77-year-old Western film veteran was asked on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast if he liked the film, to which he responded, “F*** no.”

“What are all those dancers, those guys in New York who wear bow ties and not much else? Remember them from back in the day?” Elliott asked.

“Oh, the Chippendales,” Maron responded.

“That’s what all these f***ing cowboys in that movie look like. They’re all running around in chaps and no shirts. There’s all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the f***ing movie,” Elliott said.

Elliott called Jane Campion, the film’s director and writer, “brilliant,” adding, “But what the f*** does this woman from down there, New Zealand, know about the American West?”

“And why in the f*** does she shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana and say this is the way it was? That f***ing rubbed me the wrong way, pal.”

“Where’s the Western in this Western?” Elliott asked, further calling the film “the evisceration of the American West.”

As a veteran of Western films and appreciator of the culture, he said, “I take it personal. I take it f***ing personal, pal.”

The film features a star-studded cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, and Jesse Plemons, among others.
