WATCH: Steve Irwin’s son chased and almost attacked by 12-foot crocodile

.

Quick thinking and reflexes came to Robert Irwin’s aid when he escaped the jaws of a 12-foot crocodile that chased and almost attacked him.

The son of the late Steve Irvin was filming for the season finale of Discovery’s Crikey! It’s the Irwins when he attempted to feed a giant crocodile named Casper at the Australia Zoo. The footage uploaded to Irwin’s Instagram showed Casper leaping out of the murky water he was bathing in and snapping his jaws at Irwin, who dropped the slab of meat in his hands and turned around, saying, “Bail, bail, bail!”

Irwin wrote on social media that safety is “crucial and you definitely have to know when to call it. And with such a powerful and quick croc like Casper we had no choice but to bail!”

Irwin, 18, said the zoo had just moved Casper to a new area and that this was his first time feeding him at the new location. He said that if Casper was coming out of the water “giving big strikes,” the zoo could confirm he is ready for its “Croceoseum” show.

Caesar was identified in the footage as a saltwater crocodile, a species that can “grow to be the largest, most fierce and most misunderstood reptile on the planet,” according to the Australia Zoo’s website. These crocodiles can grow up to 7 meters in length and weigh over 1,000 kilograms, making them “capable of eating wild pigs, deer, kangaroos and even cattle or wild buffalo.”

Crikey! It’s the Irwins airs on Animal Planet and follows the adventures of Irwin, along with his mother, Terri, and sister Bindi, caring for the animals at the Australia Zoo. Steve Irwin, who died in 2006 while filming a documentary, is featured in the show using archival footage of the show Crocodile Hunter, according to the New York Post.
