WATCH: Joe Rogan apologizes after compilation video of racial slur surfaces

Podcaster Joe Rogan took to Instagram to apologize after a compilation video showing him using the N-word during his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, surfaced.

Rogan explained that the video included multiple clips taken from 12 years of conversations.

“I’m making this video to talk about the most regretful and shameful thing I’ve ever had to talk about publicly,” Rogan said on Saturday. “It’s a video that’s made of clips taken out of context of 12 years of conversations on my podcast, and it’s all smushed together, and it looks f***ing horrible, even to me.”

The podcaster said he regrets ever using the word and now realizes that “there’s no context where a white person is ever allowed to say that word.”

“I thought as long as it was in context, people would understand what I was doing,” Rogan said while giving multiple pop culture examples of the word being used in the past and how times have changed. One example he gave was comedian Redd Foxx saying the word on television in the 1970s.

Rogan noted how unique the word is given that it can hold multiple meanings and have positive and negative connotations within the black community.

“It’s a very unusual word, but it is not my word to use,” Rogan said. “I’m well aware of that now.

He apologized and stated that he hopes it can be a teachable moment, recognizing that he “f***ed up.”

“I never used it to be racist because I’m not racist, but whenever you’re in a situation where you have to say, ‘I’m not racist,’ you f***ed up,” Rogan added.

The compilation video and Rogan’s apology come after nearly two weeks of criticism surrounding the podcaster’s choice to feature controversial interviews concerning COVID-19 and a conversation about skin tones.

Spotify, the streaming platform on which Rogan’s podcast is found, has also faced heat for not entirely canceling the podcaster’s show. It did, however, post policies for permissible content by which content creators are expected to abide.
