Week Fourteen

We just finished week two of full-on stay-at-home. It seems like many people are trying to maximize their shelter-in-place time, and fill it with as much as possible to enrich their current lives. It’s so great to see people trying new things and pushing themselves! But maintaining that level of effort (on top of having kids at home, financial and health worries, dealing with a lack of social support, and navigating our new “normal”) can be exhausting. So be sure to allow yourself opportunities to rest, do nothing, and take care of yourself.

My “normal” way of being is to maximize every hour of the day to get the most done. I DO get a lot done, but it’s often to the detriment of my well-being. (I’m workin’ on it with therapy). Then the pandemic hit, and my “normal” changed real fast. It’s true, I’ve been going pretty hard with productivity these past two weeks (hello, daily live videos!), but the only thing that keeps me going is the periods of rest I’ve been allowing myself during the day. After I finish a live stream, I lie on the couch to physically and mentally give myself a break. I spend more time with my kids. I’ve even taken up playing video games in the evenings as well! Anyone else playing Animal Crossing?

This is all to say that it’s AMAZING to keep up with a goal you set for yourself and push yourself to try new things. But allow for times of rest from it too. Do what is healthiest for you. Sometimes you need that creative invigoration, and the healthy way to spend your time is to take time to make art. Sometimes it’s healthier for you to take time off and be mindless for a while. Can you do both in the same day? The blend of productivity and rest is different for everyone, so listen to your body and mind, and do what is best for you.

What to Do

  • Really take a look at your days this week and think about how you are feeling, physically and mentally. Determine if what you need is rest, then GIVE IT TO YOURSELF! If you miss some days of drawing, so be it. You’ll be a more creative person with a clear, unexhausted brain. ❤️

April Prompts

Weather + Art Styles

This month we are illustrating different elements of WEATHER in different ways! Here’s how its going to work: We’ll be drawing each prompt in two ways, over two days. Draw it one way the first day, then find a different way to depict the same prompt on the second day.

Here’s how the “plus” comes in: I’ve made a list of 30 different art styles. Each day you work on a prompt, look through the art styles, choose one, and find a way to incorporate an aspect of that style into your art. This will be a great activity to help you develop your own visual style. This doesn’t have to be an exercise in making an accurate representation of that particular art style. Pull just one or two things from what you see and bring those into your art. Feel free to repeat art styles for different prompts if you’ve found a particular style to be inspirational for you!

To help you out, I’ve done a ton of research and written an article about each of the 30 different art styles. For each one, you’ll find a brief description and characteristics of that style, a Pinterest board filled with inspirational images, and a suggestion about how to apply that style to your work in Procreate.

(Please note the article is not quite finished, I’ll be updating it to completion over the next week. But all the Pinterest boards are there!)

I’ve got a tutorial or two planned for this month (and maybe even a FREE brush set!) to explore some of these art styles. I’ll also be working through some of them in my upcoming “Stay Home and Draw” Live videos! Stay tuned!
