The race on Sunday was part of the Detroit Grand Prix and saw driver Ryan Hunter-Leay narrowly miss hitting and killing the small animal.
The nail-biting clip was later shared by IndyCar on Twitter, alongside the words: 'That was nuts.

Footage shows Reay approaching the squirrel at high speed as the animal strolls across the road.
For a second it looks as though the car will hit the animal, before the squirrel took a mighty leap out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, tucking its tail underneath its body as it leapt forward.
It is unclear whether Reay spotted the squirrel or attempted to swerve out of the way.
The clip has clocked up nearly 70,000 views since it was posted yesterday, as well as 2,100 likes and 456 retweets.
Many online were impressed by the squirrel's agility, with one person commenting: 'That parkour action by the little fella though!'
Another person joked: 'Cats have nine lives. How many lives have a squirrel?'
'Real world Rocky the Flying Squirrel. Great timing,' one person remarked.
