The 43rd president said he joked with Rice about his vote to put her as a write-in candidate in November.

“She knows it. But she told me she would refuse to accept the office,” Bush, 74, told People Magazine.

Bush, a Republican, made the revelation shortly after he described today’s GOP as “isolationist, protectionist, and, to a certain extent, nativist.”

He amended those comments in his latest interview to say that he shouldn’t have painted the whole party as being that way.

“Really what I should have said — there’s loud voices who are isolationists, protectionists, and nativists, something, by the way, I talked about when I was president,” Bush said.
