PH enjoys “best rank ever,” places 50th among 130 economies in 2020 GII ranking
The Philippines has climbed the Global Innovation Index (GII) ranking from 54th place last year to 50th this 2020 among 131 economies. Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato de la Peña called the feat as the “best rank ever.”
“In 2014, just six years ago, the country still ranked 100th. We consider this as major news because it can be considered as a testament that DOST’s efforts in spearheading science, technology, and innovation are bearing fruits,” de la Peña said in a statement.
The Philippines stands out for the innovativeness of its business sector and the innovation outcomes produced by its investments, with levels of outcomes that remain even above some high-income economies.
The country is also considered to be well-integrated into global trade, ranking 1st in High-technology imports, 3rd in High-technology exports, 8th in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services exports, and 10th in Creative goods exports.
