~ 30TH Anniversary Edition of WHITESNAKE 1987 sounds great and comes with "Live" Audio Tour from 1987-1988 ~
This is a great set and what a set it is for the 2 CD version. Nice packaging. We get the original album remastered here, although it is not the original U.S. CD version lineup of songs on CD. This must be the UK version with 2 added songs in the lineup."LOOKING FOR LOVE", "YOU'RE GONNA BREAK MY HEART AGAIN" are the 2 added songs here on CD 1.CD 2 is the "live" Snakeskin Boots World Tour the group did in 1987-1988. Great to have on Audio for the first time, I believe. The sound is superior to the original U.S. 1987 original CD release. I took some pics of the new packaging for this review.Looking forward to the Super Deluxe Edition that has 4 CDs and the nicely restored DVD of the videos, making of the album. (5 in all box set.)

For those that grew up in the mid-80's, this album became a must-own in any rockers collection. With a dose of Zeppelin styled blues rock with hair-metal flair, Whitesnake's seventh album became a radio staple, plus the inspiration for many power ballad bands to come. Now on it's 30th anniversary it has been re-released and remastered for a new generation to discover it. In fact, there's two different versions, a 2CD & a deluxe 5 disc version. I chose to get the 2CD version, and it doesn't disappoint. First disc is the "1987" version of the album, including the two tracks "Looking For Love" & "You're Gonna Break My Heart Again", which were dropped on the original USA release (eventually placed on "Greatest Hits" a few years later). The remastering is well done, though I must admit I believe there may be some audio compression involved because it sounds even more over-the-top than before (definitely no remixing here), but very loud and powerful. Strangely, the track order has once again been altered, not matching either the US or UK release. To me this isn't the greatest choice, as "Crying In The Rain" followed by "Bad Boys" will always start the album for me. Still, you get all 11 studio tracks (minus the two "single" versions, that's on the deluxe set) remastered ready to go.

But while this musical line-up that made the album of Sykes/Murray/Dunbar shines throughout, it's the second disc called "Snakeskin Boots" recorded in various places (mostly Japan) during touring of 1987 & 1988 where the "video" version of the band really shines. Trust me, this is NOT bootleg quality, in fact this should have been released right after "1987" to add to Coverdale's legacy, his own "Made In Japan" if you will. The line-up of Vandenberg/Campbell/Aldridge/Sarzo completely pull off the studio material live, both from this & Slide It In to a tee. Coverdale's voice sounds incredible on these live recordings, making me regret not seeing this lineup live in their hey-day. This live CD could have been released on it's own today it's so good and edited together seamlessly as if it did come from one complete show.

When you splurge for the deluxe edition you get the demos, singles, a few remixes, and a DVD of the classic videos, but for me (for now) this was enough, the best two discs from the bunch. Sure, the name of Whitesnake brings up cringe-worthy memories of the hair-metal era, but you cannot deny the production and sound of this 8 million plus sold album. A parting funny note: the classic opener "Crying In The Rain" was almost dropped completely according to the liner notes for sounding too much like Black Sabbath. Funny that shortly after Coverdale would hire three musicians to both Ozzy and Dio's past & Black Sabbath would employ two musicians of Whitesnake's past. A small world indeed, but a big rockin' album.

Okay, I wrote a review for this but Amazon lost it or something... so here's the spare review. This album, like many from the 80's, is NOT freakin' heavy metal! Okay, now that I've gotten your attention, it IS hard rock and a damn good one at that. Now the reason it was such a good album and when it finally got noticed became such a huge seller is because of: John Sykes.

Without going too much into Sykes' history, he was with Whitesnake from '84 thru the release of this album -Coverdale (as in David) fired him and the rest of the studio band that recorded this for a variety of reasons. We all know that Geffen offered Sykes a record deal since he was responsible for the success of the WS album.

This album features the great Aynsley Dunbar on drums, Neil Murray on bass and Sykes handling ALL the guitar work save for one guitar solo on "Here I Go Again", which was done by his replacement Adrian Vandenberg. The album is repleat with heavy guitar riffs, shred style soloing (some songs) and a very thick 80's production job. This is a heavier album, if you will, than his Blue Murder album but both showcase his extensive playing and writing/arrangement skills.

I recommend this album to those who remember the 80's and lived thru them, are John Sykes fans or simply love 80's hard rock. If you can choke past the ballads -there are some real rockers here.

Very impressed with the care taken in packaging and shipping. The album is in excellent condition considering its age as advertised by vendor. Very pleased.

Solid re-mastering job; however the bigger box set to me was not worth the extra money so I am glad that record label released just the 1987 album and the live bootleg at a cheaper cost. Everyone that is a child of the 80's had this on cassette ; it is a buy for hair metal fans, metal fans, or simply put rock fans.

Finally! a remastered version of Whitesnakes self titled "1987" album. The sound is truly amazing and as a bonus you get a second disc with 12 tracks recorded during that tour. I was lucky enough to see them twice on that tour including their first show of the tour at the Texxas Jam.

If you really like & love Whitesnake like I do, this is the best CD & DVD for all die hard snake fans! Not only do you get this great & one of their best selling albums, but you get the videos off that that album that I watched as a teen on MTV. Tawny Kitan was great on those videos as well some of their new videos as well. ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!
